10 months after the Lamborghini Sián was unveiled to the world at the Frankfurt Motor Show, its sibling in roadster form – the Lamborghini Sián Roadster – a limited edition open top hybrid super sports car, premiered over the world wide web through its website at the stroke of midnight (+8 GMT). Produced in a limited series of 19 units, all 19 units were already spoken for.

“The Sián Roadster encapsulates the spirit of Lamborghini,” says Stefano Domenicali, Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “It is the expression of breathtaking design and extraordinary performance, but most importantly embodies important future technologies. The Sián’s innovative hybrid powertrain heralds the direction for Lamborghini super sports cars, and the open-top Sián Roadster affirms a desire for the ultimate lifestyle Lamborghini as we move towards a tomorrow demanding electrification.”

The Sián Roadster made its debut in a bespoke Blu Uranus, which was specially selected by Lamborghini’s Centro Stile, and together with the Ad Personam department, works in unison with each and every Sián client to entirely personalise the colour and finish of their Roadster. This signature Blu Uranus represents the blue of the sky and green of the fields in evoking the freedom and driving exhilaration presented by the open top Sián Roadster’s performance. In representing electrification, this particular Sián is finished with Oro Electrum wheels, with the same hints of subtle gold linings running across the aero splitters and diffusers of the super sports car. The interior is lined with an elegant combination of white with Blu Glauco detailing and aluminium elements in Pro Electrum with newly-designed air vents produced via 3D printing allowing customisation with a client’s initials.

Futuristic Design

The Lamborghini Sián Roadster carries with it the futuristic design DNA of the coupé, but adds on a new element with the roofless cabin for continuous open-air enjoyment. The lines are inspired by the iconic periscope line of the first Countach, running diagonally from the cockpit to the rear and culminating in the aerodynamic airstreamers behind the driver and passenger. The iconic Lamborghini Y-shaped headlights complements the car’s very low front which is integrated with carbon fibre splitters, while the Sián’s long sculptured contours and characteristic aero wings provides the powerful profile.

The overall design is pure and uncluttered – a clear statement of the optimised aerodynamic efficiency and technological prowess. Airflow is directed through the front splitters and through the front bonnet, through the side air intakes and outlets as well as over the rear spoiler, with no loss of aerodynamic efficiency from the roadster’s unique roofless design. Active cooling vanes on the rear employs unique materials-science technology patented by Lamborghini, where the operation is triggered by the reaction of smart-material elements to the temperature generated by the exhaust system. This further causes the vanes to rotate, providing an elegant and lightweight cooling solution.

The rear end of the Sián Roadster incorporates Lamborghini’s expressive and iconic hexagon design and this includes six hexagonal taillights inspired by the Countach. The rear wing of the roadster is incorporated within the profile, and extends out only during driving to enhance overall performance.

Electrification and Hybrid Technologies

The moniker Sián in local Bolognese dialect means ‘flash’ or ‘lightning’, and this appropriately denotes the Sián Roadster’s electrification as part of the future hybrid strategy, while maintaining the extraordinary emotion and dynamic performance inherent in naturally aspirated Lamborghini super sports cars.

With a hybrid system providing the highest possible power via the lightest solution in mind, the chassis of the Sián Roadster houses Lamborghini’s next-generation V12 power plant which is combined with a new powertrain.Within the gearbox lies a 48-volt e-motor that delivers an additional 34 hp. This provides for an immediate response and improved performance. The e-motor also supports low-speed manoeuvres such as reversing and parking with electric power.

A world-first technology, the Sián Roadster sports Lamborghini’s patented and innovative supercapacitor application, allowing a storage power 10-times that of a lithium-ion battery. The supercapacitor is located in the bulkhead between the cockpit and the engine in ensuring perfect weight distribution. The electric system with the supercapacitor and e-motor weighs in at only 36 kg, delivering a remarkable weight-to-power ratio of 1.0 kg/hp. Three times more powerful than a battery of the same weight and three times lighter than a battery producing the same power. The Sián Roadster is also touted to have the most lightweight and efficient hybrid solution, with symmetric power flows ensuring the same efficiency in both charging and discharging cycles.

The combination of the advance technology with the iconic V12 engine which incorporate titanium intake valves, this gives the Sián Roadster an uprated power of 785 hp (577 kW) at 8,500 rpm. Together with the hybrid system which produces an additional 34 hp, the Sián Roadster delivers a total of 819 hp (602 kW) and is capable of speeds exceeding 350 km/h.

The Lamborghini Sián Roadster also incorporates a highly sophisticated regenerative braking system developed in-house specially by Lamborghini. The symmetrical behaviour of the supercapacitor, which in contrast to the normal Li-Ion batteries, allows for the same power charging and discharging, and this fully charges the Sián’s energy storage system every time the vehicle brakes. The energy stored is an instantly-available power boost that allows the driver to draw on immediate and increased torque delivery when accelerating up to 130 km/h – when the e-motor automatically disconnects. This improves elasticity manoeuvres and making the Sián Roadster more than 10% faster than a car without this system.

These innovative technological advancements makes for an under 2.9 seconds century sprint for the Lamborghini Sián Roadster. It also improved traction forces by up to 10% in third gear. The Lamborghini Sián Roadster also benefits from a heightened level of driving comfort facilitated by the hybrid system alongside dynamic handling and performance.
