Pets seem to be a special member of the American presidential family at the White House. Below are the pets of some American presidents in the White House over time.
Mr. Joe Biden has restored the US president’s tradition of keeping pets at the White House. Previously, President Donald Trump was the first president not to bring a pet into the White House in more than 100 years. President Joe Biden brought two German shepherds, Champ and Major, into the White House. However, these two dogs were returned to Mr. Biden’s family home in Delaware after one of the animals bit a White House security staff member.
President Bill Clinton adopted a cat and named it Socks. Later, Socks the cat was called America’s First Cat. In addition to the cat Socks, President Clinton also keeps a Labrador Retriever named Buddy in the White House.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt had several pet dogs but the most famous was a Scottish terrier named Fala. Fala became one of the most famous US Presidential pets and is commemorated alongside his owner at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington DC.
President Calvin Coolidge owned a variety of pets, including a panda named Rebecca, and Billy, a pygmy hippo. However, Mr. Coolidge’s favorite pet is a white Collie named Rob Roy. Mr. Coolidge often walks his dog with his wife on the White House lawn.
President Barack Obama kept a Portuguese dog named Bo at the White House. In 2013, Mr. Obama raised another Portuguese dog named Sunny. This breed of dog is quite rare and special, their toes are webbed for swimming.
President Richard Nixon was a big dog lover. The 37th President of the United States once owned a Cocker Spaniel named Checkers.
President Gerald Ford is also a dog lover. Mr. Ford’s famous pet is Liberty, a golden retriever, given to the president when the dog was 8 months old.
President Theodore Roosevelt was instrumental in preserving natural resources, protecting land and wildlife. During his presidency, he owned many pets, one of which was the black bear Jonathan Edwards.
President Abraham Lincoln had a wild turkey named Jack.
