Spain triumphed over France 2-1 on Tuesday to secure their spot in the Euro 2024 final, marking their first appearance in a major tournament final in 12 years. They will face either the Netherlands or England in the championship match.
Sixteen-year-old Lamine Yamal made history by becoming the youngest-ever scorer in Euro history as Spain staged a comeback against France in Munich. After falling behind to Randal Kolo Muani’s early header from a Kylian Mbappé cross, Spain quickly turned the tide with two goals in a decisive four-minute spell.
Yamal, who turns 17 just before the final on Sunday, equalized with a stunning long-range strike that curled into the top corner past goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Spain then took the lead when Dani Olmo capitalized on loose ball, firing home a low shot that deflected off Jules Koundé.
“I didn’t hesitate, just took the shot,” said Yamal of his memorable goal. “I’m enjoying every moment and proud to reach the final.”
Spain’s victory marked their sixth consecutive win at Euro 2024, making them the first team to achieve such a feat in the tournament’s history and placing them on the brink of a record-breaking fourth Euro title.
“We’re one step away from glory,” remarked Olmo. “This team is incredible. We deserve this.”
Spain controlled the game masterfully after taking the lead, showcasing their renowned midfield prowess to secure the win and book their place in the final, their first since their emphatic 4-0 triumph over Italy in the Euro 2012 final.
Despite France taking an early lead, questions arose about their inability to capitalize on their attacking strengths, with Mbappé notably failing to make a significant impact despite several opportunities.
France’s manager, Didier Deschamps, acknowledged Spain’s superiority in game management, noting, “They controlled the match better than us, even though we kept pushing until the end.”
With their relentless determination and tactical acumen, Spain now await the outcome of the other semifinal to determine their opponent in what promises to be an electrifying Euro 2024 final in Berlin.
