Luke Shaw faces a race to be fit for this summer’s Euros after being named in England’s 33-man preliminary squad.
Gareth Southgate has revealed the Manchester United full-back is “up against it”.
He explained: “[Luke Shaw’s] up against it. He’s missed a lot of football. The fact that he has been our first choice in that position means we’ve probably given him a lot longer than we would have done [others].
“I’m not sure what’s realistic at this time. I have to say, he’s a long shot.”
Shaw is not the only one with fitness problems for Southgate. Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane have also struggled recently, while Jude Bellingham may not be able to take part in pre-tournament friendlies due to his involvement in the Champions League final on June 1.
On Tuesday, Southgate will announce the list of players called up for the summer training camp before deciding who will be dropped from the squad. England will face Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland in friendlies on June 1 and 7, respectively.
