The clearest proof of Garnacho’s “Red Devils” spirit is probably the acceleration and assist for Amad Diallo to score the decisive goal in the 120+2 minute in the match against Liverpool in the recent FA Cup quarter-finals.
Less than a year since April 2023 when Alejandro Garnacho signed a new contract with MU, the young player of Carrington Academy has made great progress. At that time, coach Erik ten Hag congratulated Garnacho with clear and challenging goals.
“I hope this new contract will be a source of inspiration and motivation for Garnacho to do even better. He must temporarily forget about his past achievements, focus on the future and most importantly continue moving forward,” coach Erik ten Hag said at the ceremony.
Alejandro Garnacho joined MU from Atletico Madrid in October 2020. In the early days of Erik ten Hag’s reign, Garnacho was often positioned as a left winger.
After just under 2 years, he won the FA Youth Cup and Jimmy Murphy’s young player of the year award in May 2022. Garnacho’s first match in the Premier League was MU against Chelsea in 2022 when he was only 17 years old.
Alejandro Garnacho started his scoring account in the Premier League in stoppage time at Fulham’s Craven Cottage that same year.
That goal marked Garnacho’s remarkable progress in the MU squad in the following seasons. The 2023-2024 season marked the explosion of the teenage striker with a goal at Everton’s Goodison Park.
Receiving a cross from Diogo Dalot’s right, Garnacho flew in an upside-down bicycle position, pinning the ball into Everton’s net. That goal won him the goal of the month award and will no doubt be shown over and over again as a standard lesson plan for the upside-down bicycle technique in soccer.
After that match, Garnacho won the best player award in the match. Since that victory, Manchester United have won 9 out of 13 matches. For MU fans, Garnacho made an impression with the fighting spirit of a “Red Devils” warrior.
Every time he takes to the field, Garnacho always shows an explosive competitive spirit. In a position that is considered a handicap, Garnacho paired with Diogo Dalot will be a good pair as both have speed and technique. This will help coach Erik ten Hag have more tactical flexibility when on the opposite wing Marcus Rashford is returned to his natural position.
Up to now, Garnacho has appeared in 38 matches, more than the previous season with a total of only 34 times. Garnacho’s progress is not just reflected in the number of appearances. Last season, Garnacho played the role of MU’s super sub, able to turn the situation around when he came off the bench.
However, every time coach Erik ten Hag assigned him the starting role, Garnacho seemed to not be able to keep up with the speed of the match. With the ongoing season, Garnacho is on the list of 11 players to start the field since November 2024 with 26 consecutive matches.
Garnacho has returned the trust of coach Erik ten Hag. Up to now, Garnacho is one of MU’s best players with 8 contributions (5 goals, 3 assists) in the Premier League. This achievement is only behind striker Rasmus Hojlund and captain Bruno Fernandes.
MU’s tumultuous season has not ended, the position to participate in the prestigious Champion League arena is still quite far from MU. But for Red Devils fans, they see a bright future when the team they love has new elements, with “Red Devils” blood in them such as: Alejandro Garnacho, Kobie Mainoo or Rasmus Hojlund next to Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes.
