Art Director Emilio Alarcon – Greenhouse Bus

Greenhouse bus

“Greenhouse Bus” is a project aimed at transforming intercity mobility by turning electric buses into mobile greenhouses. This proposal aims to address the challenges of global warming and the lack of green space in cities.

The idea behind the greenhouse bus is to utilize the space available on the bus to grow trees, shrubs and small trees, turning them into mobile oases in the midst of an urban environment. Buses are self-contained structures, making them ideal for creating a controlled greenhouse-like environment. Sunlight can penetrate clear or translucent bubbles made of materials such as glass, EFTE (ethylene teflon) or polycarbonate, helping plants receive the light they need for photosynthesis.

To ensure the correct operation of the greenhouse bus, several technical aspects must be considered. It is important to have proper ventilation to regulate the temperature and humidity inside the bus, thereby avoiding the build-up of excessive heat and humidity that can negatively affect plant growth. plant. Additionally, an anchoring system should be implemented to ensure the tree is firmly secured to the bus body or structure and that there are no safety or vibration issues.

As for growing methods, greenhouse buses may use techniques such as hydroponics, where plants are grown in a nutrient solution instead of a traditional substrate, or they may also use lightweight substrates to minimizing the extra weight created by trees and their containers.

In addition to the aesthetic aspect and creating green space in the city, greenhouse buses can also contribute to reducing environmental impact. By increasing the amount of vegetation, they will help absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) and improve air quality. Additionally, they can function as small mobile parks, providing passengers and pedestrians with a more natural and pleasant environment throughout their journey.

On hot days, the windows and upper doors of the bus in the greenhouse should be opened to allow air to circulate. This helps maintain the right temperature and prevents the plant from overheating. It will also be necessary to create adaptation areas for passengers.

Everything from giant double-decker buses to minibuses can be adapted.

Maintenance by professional gardeners will be required, mainly for irrigation and disease and pest control.
