Giant El Camino 4×4 Blends Together the Best of Chevy for Tiny Monster Truck Presence

In a time when car-like crossovers have become the norm, car-based pickups have largely become a thing of the past. However, there are some trucks that have gained a cult following, especially as electrification takes over. One such iconic vehicle is the Chevrolet El Camino, which has stood the test of time as one of the most enduring machines in its class. Now, we have an incredibly unique example of the El Camino that blends the best of Chevy’s offerings into a tiny monster truck presence—the El Camino 4×4.

Among El Camino enthusiasts, there are certain specifications that hold particular appeal. While the utility coupe was produced in five generations between 1959 and 1987, many fans favor the third generation. This generation, produced from 1968 to 1972, was right in the heart of the muscle car era and shared its platform with the Chevelle. It not only retained the Big Block muscle of its predecessor but also boasted the distinctive Coke bottle styling of the time.

However, the Chevrolet El Camino 4×4 is a unique Franken-build that might leave you a bit confused. It features a 1970 body with a 1969 front end and a different chassis altogether. Instead of the A-Body rear-wheel-drive platform, it now rides on a 1977 Chevy four-wheel-drive chassis. Powering this beast is a 454 Big Block engine borrowed from a 1971 Chevelle, paired with a GM TG350 three-speed automatic transmission. It’s clear that this build isn’t just for show—it’s meant to be driven and enjoyed.

The 4×4 nature of this machine has earned it the nickname “Chevelle 4×4,” although it seems to go by various names. According to the owner, Charlie Tatum, children often see it as a bit of a monster truck. In fact, a Holley video showcases the El Camino in all its glory, describing it as the Giant Yellow El Camino. In the video, a digital artist even went wild, envisioning a mid-engined El Camino with a massive 632 Big Block engine. The visual depiction truly captures the imagination and power of this unique vehicle.

It’s great to hear that Charlie Tatum isn’t just letting this Chevrolet collect dust in a garage. He enjoys putting some serious miles on the El Camino, and it’s not hard to understand his motivation—this machine turns heads wherever it goes. The blend of Chevy’s best features, the outlandish design, and the raw power of the Big Block engine make the El Camino 4×4 a truly remarkable and unforgettable vehicle.
